Real tactical blunder was staying in WAC late 80s early 90s
In the late 80s and early 90s is really when we should have made a move out of the WAC. It is when our brand was strongest. The breakup of the CFA should have clued us in to either go independent or form a larger, national conference, probably with Air Force.

I really think there are 2 parts to that. 1st, Lavell wanted to stay in a conference instead of going independent. He had his reasons, but ultimately I think the short term loss of being without a conference would have resulted in the long-term gain of being in a better conference. If we don't stay in the WAC, Utah doesn't build their program like they were able to. 2nd, I think church leadership didn't want to Utah to fall behind BYU, angering members that were UU fans.

Think of it, had we left the MWC we would be playing the UU on a 2-for-1 or 3-for-1 basis in football, just like we did with Utah State.

Go Cougs!!!
