One super fun two-player game is JAMBO. Really easy to pick up.
I'm sad Pandemic didn't work out for you, but I know that feeling. We had some really great friends rave about RoboRally and then when we played it, the game lasted FOREVER. I'm sure it's a fun game, but I'll never play it again.
Also, I'm just remembering that of the 150+ times I've played Pandemic, 145+ of those were just with my wife. The game is way easier with just 2 people/roles. I am now remembering that I've ALWAYS lost with 4 or more players.
Also, never underestimate the value of dice and cups. Liars Dice always seems to get people laughing, farkle, etc.
And strategy games that I like that I can never seem to get others to play with me: Powergrid, Caylus
