BYU vs Pacific II
Put this loss down to the coaching at BYU. I have been saying all year that the prescription to beat BYU is defend the arc and slow the pace down. Keep the score as low as possible and you put BYU in a difficult situation. Please show me an offense that is designed to get open layups under the basket. I see it from opponents but not from BYU.

I lay this on Coach Rose and teams in the WCC are not filled with great athletes but rather lesser talent that accept coaching and run the sets designed by their coaching staff. If you think differently then look at both St. Marys and Pacific and tell me which player from either team you want on the BYU team and which would support adding to the BYU roster.

Take away Fischer and Emery on the FT line and we missed way to many. The game became a FT shooting contest in the final five minutes and Pacific did not blink. They stepped to the line and knocked down shots.

Speaking of Emery, he continues to show that he may have hit a wall. His three point shot has deserted him. He also has to become aware of defenders behind him. The blocked shot after the steal was devastating to BYU. It was a clear momentum reversal.

Pacific shot 41% from the field, 33% from the arc (their average) and 86% from the line, almost 20% above their normal. BYU matched those numbers with 34% from the field, 21% from the arc and 77% from the FT line. But that last number was inflated by Fischer hitting so many down the stretch. We missed a couple of front ends and that is like missing two. Pacific, a much smaller team, also out rebounded BYU 41-36. When that happens it is more a reflection of bad shooting by BYU as 31 of those were defensive rebounds.

I know I am beginning to sound like I am harping on the same subject but BYU had got to develop a half court offense that runs the ball through the post. Right now just about every time we put the ball to Davis he is going to look to shoot it. It would be much better if you would take the pass, kick it back out and repost closer to the basket. The starting guard line today was 10-37. That just won’t cut it against any team, even one as bad as Pacific.

All you guys that got excited about Hartsock must be reconsidering today. He looked like the freshman he is and not only took a couple of quick, ill advised shots but got abused on defense.

Pacific is not a big team but we refused to put a lineup on the floor that could take advantage of their lack of height. Part of it is that outside of Davis we don’t have a post player that can score inside. Austin refuses to take a shot and Kaufusi is either hot or ice cold.

Looking forward to the WCC tournament I guess I can play a little more golf before flying back to Washington, DC.
