First thing. Dealer margins are not thin. Even if selling a car
at manufacturers invoice, dealers make a profit (dealer incentives/interest rate promotions from banks/aftermarket items/ and yes warranty insurance). Second, shopping around and comparing apples to apples for the right manufacturers warranty is perfect for someone that wants that extra piece of mind.
It's no different than health care. You just never know when you'll need it, but are happy you have it.
