Who do you think spent more money, and why? Who's incentivized the most and has the most to spend and loose? If NYC lost on this, what pecident would that set for them? If the prosecution said "oops", how would they look? It's not about the truth; it's about careers within an institution and protecting both. How much did the State spend compared with the accused? What's the incentive for the prisoner's confession compared with the careers of the prosecution? Etc., etc... And this goes on regularly, not because the prosecution folks are trying to do a bad job; rather, they are trying to move ahead in their institution, and that's the way it's set up and incentivized - they're doing a good job as they've been trained. So, it's really my fault, because I allow this to go on as a citizen.
