He was introduced to the Gospel in Vietnam. After he got home, the missionaries showed up to his house in Pittsburgh and he decided to take the discussions. He said that everything they said just made sense. He "felt it in his bones" as if he was being reminded of something he already knew. Which is exactly what was happening. We've all known this stuff since before our mortal lives--some of us just need a reminder from the Spirit.
