Ngata's family on his mom side are all BYU fans. Half first cousins went to BYU including Tevita Moala. His other first cousin, Fili Moala first choice was BYU but his grades were too bad for BYU so they never offered. He went to USC and then drafted to Colts. Fili wanted to go to BYU and told them.

After Tevita Moala transferred to Oregon State it made the family OSU fans so he was interested in Oregon because his cousin went to OSU (I know it's weird but you have to understand Tongan and their family dynamics). Tevita Moala was their oldest cousin of their clan and Ngata looked up to him as an older brother.

Ngata was annoyed that BYU didn't offer his cousin Fili and was impressed with the visit that he committed to Oregon. It broke his mother's heart because her family wanted BYU it was their dream. So Harmon was right. It was similar to the Mique Juarez situation.
