link to the Y is coincidental. It is providential that it turns out to mimic the hand sign for the letter Y. But all of us raised in the islands or from Poly families use the gesture like mainland people use a wave of the hand when saying hello or goodbye. And when mainland people do it back it is appreciated. To us it kind of forms a bond even with strangers
For example, I wa during H3 heading to the tunnel, and I saw a van coming behind me real fast. I looked and started to move over to let him go. But he was going so fast he almost hit me because he swerved into the right lane. We both said some unpleasantries. He was mad I was in the left lane and I was mad because I was trying to get out of the way and he didn't give me a sec to do it. When I started down the other side of the mountain I saw him again. We both looked at each other and he put his window down and gave me a Shaka and I was doing the same thing. We could have pulled over and talked story for hours like old friends even though we had never met before. That is what Shaka is all about.
