Again, everyone was reporting that expansion was dead. That it wasn't going to happen. Cincinnati, Memphis, Houston, UConn, CSU, ECU...all of them would have been interested in the outcome of this meeting, but none were able to respond with 20 hours of the teleconference. Holmoe and BYU were. Here was their statement:
“We are obviously excited the leadership of the Big 12 has advised commissioner Bob Bowlsby to review potential expansion candidates. BYU is known for its academic excellence and I believe we have an exceptional athletic program. As I’ve stated before, I would like to see our student-athletes compete at the highest level.”
Just the idea of using Bowlsby's name would be an hour long discussion most places. And yet, they were able to encapsulate in three sentences an exact response to the criteria mentioned in the teleconference. That either shows prophetic insight, the world's best PR team, or a head's up on what was most likely coming.
