How about with situations like this coaches try to do what is best
For the kid?

For some kids a suspension might be the best thing for them. For other kids suspension from school and football might be the worst thing for them.

School and football are two positive things in his life. He has to take mental health counseling and pay restitution for the damage he caused.

I say if the kid is having some mental health issues and the only two positive things he has are football and a college scholarship... Then let him keep the two things and build off of those things. Make him do community service, make him pick up equipment after practice, make him get a minimum 3.0 GPA... These could be very effective things for teaching a young man discipline rather than just kicking him to the curb and saying "good luck"
