You missed the point....
If they are going to insist you compromise your privacy then just ell them you're not going to volunteer. but a background check isn't quite as intrusive as taking your finger prints and putting them in a government data base. I would probably allow them to check my background, at least to see if I have a criminal record, but I'm not going to let them start a file on me and keep records on me, especially with my finger prints. It is easy for them to simply look and see if I have a criminal history but it is none of their business what my credit rating is, how much I make, where I've lived at different points of my life, etc.
