The Big 12 had the pro-rata TV money, and could have added a championship game 5 years ago if they had selected BYU and Louisville. Now, the Cards are in the ACC, loving it, and would not switch to the Big 12 for $100M, even if Florida State and Clemson jumped, and won an NCAA title and a CWS. They likely could have had Pitt or Syracuse if they had moved sooner.

Because they waited, Cincy and UConn are no longer "power teams" and are now "G5" teams, making their additions diminished. Boise St football is trending down, making it so that the Big 12 can no longer add a team that just had top 5 finishes and won the Fiesta bowl. Their choice will be even lower in 5 years due to the increasing separation between G5 and P5.

The delay has been terrible for the Big 12. I still want in. But the Big 12 has made terrible, terrible mistakes in expansion, staring with leaving BYU out in the 90s.
