Mortgage lenders usually require you to have flood insurance if you live in the 100 year flood plain, but this event far exceeded the borders of that area. Many people who thought they were safe from floods ended up underwater.

Am I right thinking that most home owners insurance doesn't cover flood damage?

Something our stake sent out said only 15% of affected homes had flood insurance.
