This entire discussion assumes that the only reason a defensive coach calls a

timeout on third down is to tell his players something about the upcoming play.

There are lots of other reasons why a timeout could be called that may not be obvious to the casual fan.

The best measure of whether a coach's methods work is the overall productivity of the defense.

IMO, time outs should be used for clock-management purposes only.
