I've thought this might be a natural consequence of our exclusion

I think a lot of BYU faithful are pissed that we are being implicity excluded, likely because of our beliefs. Add to that any non-LDS people who might have similar views to us and there is definitely something to dip into in an effort to spite those who oppose us.
