pulled pay phones out of school buildings. Offices in the school with phones close earlier than a lot of practices. We had a coaches room in the locker room in HS in the 80's that didn't even have a phone to call from. We had to go to the lobby and use the pay phone. Most of us had a code name for who the call was coming from so when the operator would try to connect a collect call to our house by that name it would signal that our parent would reject the call and then come to pick us up from school.

Now days that isn't an option at some locations so having a cell phone is often needed.
