No, he's a newly minted ESPN analyst...
... and I really like his style a lot. He was being razzed as a newbie commentator, and he handled it very well and in entertaining and respectable fashion. I was surprised that I was impressed.
Back to the OP...Bateman wasn't even one of the top QBs in Utah his sr. year. I have no idea how he was almost named the starter at Alabama until Hurtz became the obvious choice.
