Yes, but their children, who would often be the ones applying to BYU, are often
not raised in as poor of situations due to the church teaching the parents about Word of Wisdom, importance of education, staying out of debt, not having children out of wedlock, etc.
That's not to say everything is always this way, but I've definitely seen a correlation between being active and the church and breaking the poverty cycle.
