that our teams overall success is based on who our assistant coaches are. That just isn't the case. Now, I do think we could use an upgrade as far as assistants go---I'd trade Lacomb for Pope any day, and while I do think Assistants can help/hurt a team....that is not our main problem.
The reason we are sucking this year is not because of assistant coaches IMO. This is a Dave Rose problem. In particular we are struggling on offense in a way that we haven't under Dave Rose. Dave gives A LOT of power to Nashif to run the offense. If you watch during time outs Nashif is usually the one drawing up plays and making the adjustments---Terry isn't doing a good job this year---but Dave Rose hasn't stepped in and made smart adjustments (like getting our bigs out of the post for more spacing/screens) Our transition offense is the worst coaching I have seen at BYU since Dave Rose has been here.
I don't blame Nashif overall for the offense (although I think he deserves some blame) --- I blame Dave Rose. Pope being on this team wouldn't change anything as far as our offense goes IMO ( assuming he had the same responsibilities he did when he was here 2 years ago)
Again---Coach Pope leaving did very little to affect this current team. Guys like KC, Fischer, Haws, etc leaving along with a change in offensive scheme have far more to do with our struggles than some assistant coach.
