When I checked in for American Saturday there were no seats left except for extra charge seats. When I already paid $700 for the ticket, I'm not going to let them charge me more to select one of the magical cost-more seats. For the second leg of my flight they didn't have a seat for me until the very last minute, and were even insinuating I might not get on the flight. Then they did find me a seat and it happened to be in the exit row with tons of legroom. So it ended well, but still annoying that they basically played chicken with the seat situation.

Going home it's the same situation. Everything is greyed out except the extra cost seats in coach. So I can't choose my seats again. I'll probably end up with a decent seat again, but the constant upselling is annoying.
