I think most of the posts I have read about BYU turning to some additional recruiting grounds talk about getting a new assistant coach with those connections. Of course it is easier said than done. I have not read anything that just says go and get kids from Brazil or Russia or Australia. You are right, it is not that easy.
But, if BYU Coaches identify a new international connection as critical, then pick a place and emphasize it. Hire an assistant with connections outside of Utah and go all in. Just off the top of my head, a guy like Travis Hansen for Russia or Jonathan Tavernari for Brazil seem to have deep connections in some big, talent rich areas that are underdeveloped for talent in college basketball. Australia seems to be the hot place but is too popular. BYU needs to be in on the "emerging" basketball market. Outside of soccer and volleyball, basketball is the biggest and hottest sport in Brazil. That is a big country of 200 Million people with a lot of really good athletes. Big LDS presence too. Put down some roots there, take your overseas trips there and cultivate this new area.
