No guaranteed money at all for a 2nd rd draft pick an D league money is awful.
http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/242860/d-league-increases-salaries-for-16-17-season

Tier A players get $26,000/season, a per diem ($40!) while traveling with the team, insurance provided by the team and the possibility of bonuses for every D-League aware (MVP = $3,000 and other awards range from $1,000-$1,500).

If he signs with a team and is stashed in the D-League then there is more money (Kyle Wiltjer went undrafted and is currently making $540,000) but if his plan is the Jimmer route (play in the D League as an extended NBA audition) then it is better to first have made your millions first because that may not work out and that isn't a salary to live on indefinitely (and in this scenario you have passed up the chance at a free education/degree).

There is money for a player of his skill set in Europe definitely, and if that is more important than playing in the NBA then he should pull the trigger soon (maximize earning potential), but if the NBA is his dream then he has work to do and doing it while at BYU makes a ton of sense while he doesn't have the rigorous travel, game and recovery schedule that goes with being on an NBA team.

Obviously I am just commenting and speculating as I have no inside information at all, but my opinion is that anyone that doesn't have a first round grade and has eligibility remaining should plan to come back or transfer (really only an option for grad students as age does become a significant factor at some point).
