Walk-on
Buy-in from the institutions.
Pepperdine has flat out stated that they won't use Basketball as a means to grow the school. It's just not in their priorities. It seems like this should be a premier basketball conference with all the prime locations (spokane & moraga aside).

Why can't the WCC become an elite basketball conference?

Lack of talent. Lack of good coaching. Lack of interest from top recruits.

Lack of everything besides Gonzaga, St. Mary's, and BYU. Next question.

You should edit that to Gonzaga and SM. BYU b-ball is pretty terrible.

They would need at least 5 solid teams to do that

That would certainly be elite. Only one conference got 50% of their members

Because almost every school is the 4th or 5th option in its region.
