Unfortunately that's not how the last few seasons have gone.
With conference championship games those teams on the cusp will jump BYU because their big wins are coming at the end of the season. Sure, if BYU starts hot then they'll be in the conversation but come season's end, even if they were undefeated, they'll slip a few spots. With their schedule, at best BYU reaches #3 or #4 if everything went perfect for them in the first 4 weeks. It'll be easy for them to slide a couple of spots to one loss SEC, Big 10, or ACC teams.

If BYU goes undefeated & every conference champ has at least 1 loss & there aren't more than three 1-loss teams.
