Let's put it this way...
In my lifetime, BYU has finished ranked in the Top-25 18 times. Only one of those has been since 2010.
In my lifetime, BYU has won or tied for 22 conference championships (of its 23). Obviously, none of those has come since 2010.
In my lifetime, BYU has had a Heisman trophy winner, a Doak Walker Award winner, two Outland Trophy winners, and a multitude of All-Americans. NONE of those have been since 2010.
So, regardless of the level of competition, how would you rate independence thus far?

Oh please. Tom very recently stated we're already in negotiations for an extension and that both parties want the deal.
