Unfortunately I think this is all correct
We got where we were because we were ahead of the curve for awhile. That combined with a less stringent honor code and less spotlight on players led to a perfect storm from about 1978-1985. Unfortunately I was born in 1976 so don't remember that golden age but was able to bask in its afterglow through high school.
The chances of finding a revolutionary system again is nil. And even if it were to happen, nowadays there is too much money out there to not copy whoever is having success. Our revolutionary system wouldn't be revolutionary for long.

I also believe Utah's success has hurt us significantly. Until the mid-2000s it would have been unheard of to lose an elite recruit to Utah. To other blueblood programs yes but not to Utah. 20 years ago we would have had essentially the best of Utah's current DL combined with the best of ours. Their OL doesn't have quite as many local boys but we'd have a couple of their best along with ours.

My current debate is how much do I want to support the new BYU. I often long for the 4 years I spent out of state. I didn't have to feel obligated to buy tickets or spend my whole Saturday driving to and from the game. I could just listen on KSL if I was home and our dialup was working or go to the Stake Center and watch the game in 4 hours. Do I want to stay the fan I have been and continue to buy tickets, donate to the CC, buy the gear or should I DVR the game and watch it in 2 hours in the comfort of my home, buy a new shirt every few years and let my legacy membership lapse.
I'm trying to train my mind to just support the players. Embrace the BYU ideals and not worry about scores. That is still a work in progress and easier to do mentally than with my time and money.
