Sweetness Walk-on
A move like this would considerably damage the product.
Everyone in that scenario would come out as losers. 75-80% of the games by this point in the season would be meaningless exhibition games with no interest. Every fan base in the country would experience the apathy BYU has seen over the last 8 years because the season would be over for all but about 15-20 teams by week 8 or 9. This would be such a short sighted move.

I can foresee a scenario where the P5s reshuffle there own conferences a little bit, Maybe a few teams get left out, but there’s no way conferences/divisions are going away...at least I sincerely hope they don’t. It would really damage the sport. Leagues and competition are what make sports interesting for fans. It’s why we don’t watch fcs. Not because the football is terrible, but because we don’t care about the results.

Look at Utah this week. They have their own game against Colorado which is huge, only because they are in a divisional race. Then later tonight they get to watch ASU vs Oregon which has huge implications as well. Conferences/leagues draw interest from multiple fan bases. Tons of Ute fans will be tuned into that game and ASU fans interest, which would otherwise be minimal, is super high and charged because they are now fighting for a division. Take away the divisional races from the Utah and ASU games and your viewership plummets.

Everybody loses in the scenario you’re describing. Networks, teams, fans, etc. An inferior product and ultimately less money to go around.
