I'm not from Utah so understanding the BYU / U conflict is a bit difficult sometimes. However, spending all of my college years in Utah, I'm not in Utah any longer, I grew into really hating U fans and students for the way they dress, act, say they hate the Y, etc. I also went to the U for a year; that's really how I developed a true dislike. It's funny, I didn't really understand I was going to an inferior school until I transferred to the Y (there is no debate on this point by the way, BYU's business school was ranked #1 nationally in the regional category by the WSJ).
So this is my question: Why would a member have a hatred for the Y as so many U students do or even residents of Utah do? The hatred for the Y extends past member students, which amazes me. On the surface, it just seems like there is something wrong with that with hating the institution that the first presidency endorses?
It's particularly curious to me becuase outside of Utah, BYU to the rest of America is a far better school that garners much more respect than a state school like the U. Shouldn't utahans be proud that a business school in their state is ranked #1 in the WSJ?
I can understand a Mormon hater like Rocky Anderson hating the Y, but a member? It probably doesn't matter eiher way, but at least I'd like to understand the psychology of the phenomenon. Please help me out.
