The pay of guys in Philadelphia or North Carolina or Los Angeles or Salt Lake City isn't greater or lesser depending on where they live within the US.
We're paid enough to keep us from looking elsewhere.

One of my co-workers moved from L.A. to Reno for lower cost of living. When that wasn't enough, he moved to Albania and then sort of floated around that area of Europe for a while. It became problematic when he tried to work from a country that is disallowed for connections to our network. Until he reported that he could no longer connect to our VPN or Azure tenant, we thought he was still in Reno. we looked through logs and found his path that seemed to be on course to end up in the Middle East.
