I played HS basketball my freshman and sophomore years. During the summer leading up to my junior year I was immersed in
Football weight training, camps, practices etc… For this reason I did not attend any basketball workouts, camps etc…

Once football season ended and basketball tryouts came around I was surprised when I didn’t make the basketball team. I had been a two year starter and was easily top 3 in my class.

This was around the early days of specialization and I was punished for the reasons you mentioned. Was I a freak athlete that could get away with not attending stuff? Unfortunately not, I was an above average athlete and not good enough to just show up when the season started and get away with it.

Looking back, I lacked the maturity, the understanding and the parental assistance to support me in both football and basketball. My sons today do the tight rope of football, baseball and in some cases basketball which is really challenging for us as parents and for my kids but we realize that my kids aren’t talented enough to ignore what’s asked by all coaches.
