"We theoretically bring back all but one major piece from a top-half finish..."

That isn't certain at all. That is why people are worrying. I hope it happens, but it typically doesn't even at big time schools. If we lose assistants and a lot of players, BYU is going to be in a mess that takes at least several years to get out of.
