Going all-in on a single food strategy is the downfall of most.
There is also quite a bit of luck involved in terms of your assigned area. Some areas are just inherently better for hunting/fishing/foraging. The long term lack of fats/carbs is what seems to cause most of the late dropouts. Time/resource management also seems to be a big issue. Some contestants spend way too much time and energy on over-building their shelters, or on some big project like building a canoe. The smart play seems to be preserving your finite energy for doing the most impactful activities, which would be food acquisition and preservation from multiple sources.
