In a word, yes. Allowing evil to occur, because God necessarily had
to respect man's agency for His plan to work, is not the same thing as causing evil. How can you say someone is free, and then not allow them to choose to be as evil as they want to be?
The problem with many of those philosophers/scientists is that they do not believe in free will to begin with. That flawed fundamental assumption leads to flawed conclusions.
