I'd agree that the tact matters, but I think where some people
would see if different is that they wouldn't view commentary about signs of autism being negative or offensive in any way. For a parent with an autistic child I think the parent often comes to see the autism as something special that they love about the child. It is part of who they are. It doesn't mean they wouldn't want the child to not have to live with it, but at the same time they carry no negative connotation with the child being autistic. So at that point, discussing the characteristics, signs, or complications with it are just not negative in any way. Being open and willing to discuss can actually be helpful not hurtful.

So from my perspective, I would generally give the other person in the OP the benefit of the doubt on the situation and not find offense in what was said.
