With all due respect to the aforementioned posters. I understand the logic behind possibly going independent (e.g, more money, more control over broadcasting, no deadlines or similar conference restrictions, new broadcast facilities and HD truck). We have heard the Big XII rumors/speculation/conjecture all summer long, and I even understand the logic behind the Bib XII possibly expanding.

But what I have never understood, and what no one has attempted to explain the logic behind, is the connection between going independent and the BIG XII. Why would it be necessary, or even beneficial, to first go independent in order to then gain admission to the BIG XII? Please explain if you know, because I don't see it. To me, the two inquiries are entirely separate.
