If I understand correctly, declaring independence would be used to essentially get around the MWC-imposed Sept 1 deadline. Like you, I don't buy it. This seems to assume that BYU already has, for practical purposes, an "invite" from the Big XII. Seems like a mighty risk to take just to avoid an artificial deadline, particularly since the BIG XII could simply invite BYU next year if it wanted to.
