Using scriptures to bash BYU fans is a PR nightmare
and the media did pick it up. Going on BYU TV, which is broadcast around the world, complaining about players and their parents who have an "entitlement" attitude in the middle of the Heaps/Nelson QB controversy was idiotic. Yes, he could have been speaking about any player or his parents, or some imaginary player or imaginary parents, but the comment in and of itself unnecessarily raises speculation and held one of his highest profile players our for public scrutiny and scorn. Bronco complains about fans publicly here and there, and that doesn't build the base. You may be fine with it. Other fans are not. Bronco goes on national programs, such as Jim Rome, and brags about how he gets his coaches home by 6:00 pm - then proceeds to get his butt kicked by FSU at home the next day, when BYU looked completely shell shocked (an all too familiar result in Bronco's big games). Bronco bragged about how much he delegates to his coaches in the 2010 season . . . and was completely clueless in the BYU/AFA post game when asked why Heaps was out the entire second half. He didn't think to ask his OC, Anae, about that - because he delegated all decision making to him. He said he had all the faith in the world in his entire coaching staff before 2010 USU game, even after the game, then fired his DC and took over. I commend him for the latter action, and for dumping Anae. I am happy that Bronco made some coaching changes and expect BYU will have another 10 win season in 2012. My problem with Bronco is his occasional thin skinned, dumb comments either in response to fans or veiled digs at a certain segment of fans or people. It's way beneath him. I don't understand it. He has a way of saying "screw you" to fans by referring to those who question his play calling "Pharisees and Sadducees." Perhaps that is not a national PR nightmare, because the national media wouldn't know or care about the reference. But BYU fans do - and it was lame. Bronco will continue to be Bronco. He will be an above-average coach with above-average results, and will be frustrated at those who expect/desire more. He learned from his "Quest for Perfection" year that setting expections high is not in his best interest. That's fine. I could just do without some of the smugness - something that even occasionally comes across in his fireside talks. That's not a PR nightmare. It's just dumb.
