...and I couldn't even say with any confidence that anyone else could do a better job.
One potential HC could be Navy's HC Ken Niumatalolo. He has a track record of success and is an offensive minded coach but his success has been at running the option. That's definitely not a good fit for BYU.

Lance Reynolds?
Meh, a very good assistant but who knows if he has HC chops
Mike Leach?
Not active LDS

Forget it. Bridge burned

Andy Reid?
He's an NFL guy and it's doubtful he'd want to put the time in required to be a good recruiter. Also, I'd think that dealing with BYU fan expectations would be a deal breaker for him
Dave Campos?
Maybe. He has HC experience in the NFL, has been a very successful DC and position coach in the NFL. I don't know anything about him personally and I think to be a good college HC you need to have some charisma for recruiting.
Kragthorpe?
Good at Tulsa but washed out at Louisville
Charlie Stubbs?
a longshot. Longtime OC at numerous schools: offensive coordinator at Oregon State University (1985-1990), University of Memphis (1994), University of Tennessee-Martin (1995), University of Nevada-Las Vegas (1996-97), University of Alabama (1998-2000; 1999 SEC Offensive Coordinator of the Year), University of Tulsa (2002-06), the University of Louisville (2007), and most recent, the University of Central Missouri (2008-09). Now he's the HC at Nicholls St (1-10 last yr). He was on Lavell's staff at BYU in the early 80's including the National Championship year.

In a nutshell, for those who want Bronco fired, it's not a pretty picture out there. The pickings are slim.
