... (early 80s) when I was a student, my buddy, who worked for BYU facilities, told me that the chairs were actually from a huge cancelled order some other project had made to a manufacturer. The manufacturer who was stuck with them made BYU an offer they couldn't refuse to take them off their hands. I've since heard this same account from a couple others. Not first hand knowledge, but I had no reason to doubt the story, either.
