to admissions. All I can think of is they are getting so caught up in their new philosophy that they're missing kids.
In this kid's case, it seems he has all the intangibles, extracurriculars, etc. as well, so you would think he would get in anyway. I just worry that they are getting too caught up in this "holistic" nonsense that they're trying to get all these different types of kids, forgetting that they are still an academic institution. I worked in admissions many years ago--under the old approach, a kid with his grades and ACT score would have a high enough score even without all the other stuff to be an auto accept.
Seems like picking and choosing this way just leaves everyone wondering what they need to do to get into BYU, and nobody can really pin that down anymore.
