We had a monthly allowance that was double their age.

That could be used for any spending on toys, entertainment, etc but it may also be needed to pay someone to do their chores if they're choosing not to do them themself. We see allowance as a tool to teach the value of money and as a bargaining tool for teaching responsibility.
