I don't know that it needed to be any longer, maybe more to the left. I think he
could have adjusted his route and reached out for it without slowing much, and protected the defender from the ball. He decided to turn and high point it instead, and gave the defender the heads up the ball was coming, and also opened up his body so the defender could hit his arm. Letting it come down over his shoulder makes it a tougher play for the defender.
