You are correct. I just watched the play 15 times and in slow motion.

He had a step behind the defense. As the ball is coming he slows down and turns toward the ball which allows the defense to make a play. Had the ball been thrown a couple yards longer, he could have reached forward and not slowed down and the defense wouldn’t have been able to make a play.
