This prompted fond memories of Klondike Derby in the early 70's in SE Idaho
Camped along the riverbeds of Snake river. Super cold then as well, and I remember multiple station contests competing in scouting skills against other troops. The two that stick out in my memory was Morse code with flags and fire building from scratch. We were morse code demons and would fly thru that thing like seasoned military vets.

We did cheat on fire building though, as one of us would always pack some kerosene in our canteens. Switched who did it each year....awesome times. Really loved our scoutmaster and didn't really matter he was less active, supergood guy that I really looked up to.
