Using Germany's test which we chose not to use. Both countries went early and hard at testing. Not because number of cases matters more, but so that they could isolate and quarantine more effectively.
Public health and commercial labs are using PCR techniques, which look for genetic material, to test for the novel coronavirus. The US has struggled to ramp up testing. Even when it works well, PCR is slow. Limited investment in the necessary technology means we don’t have fast, bedside testing.
