I understand Vincent's take - namely that it's an reasonable way to control wildlife populations, but not for him personally. However, omnivorous people being strongly opposed to hunting per se - that I don't get.
I think it's also true that if people saw graphic images of what happens on the kill floor of a meat processing plant, they might tend more toward vegetarianism. Killing is not pretty and would probably be shocking for most people. That's not the case for me. I have no qualms about the process and the quality of the end result in the US, as the USDA regulates these plants strictly.
Having hunted for meat and worked on a kill floor as a teen, my understanding of both may be better than most people's. Also, growing up on a 350 acre farm in New England, of which half was wooded, helped me understand what a particularly harsh winter will do to all types of wildlife when there aren't enough food resources for the population.
