My mom and her 13 younger siblings grew up in a 1000 sqft house grandpa built.
House was built in '52. Didn't get interior plumbing until '60. So anything is possible.

My four kids have about as many per kid as I had growing up for all 7 of us kids. But both setups have their charm.

For an average CBer? 6000 square feet.

You could reasonably do 1800-2000. Probably preferably 2500-3000.

We raised 4 kids (3 still there) in 2000 sq feet. Plenty of space.
