Not all that crazy... $100k to $500k in 32 years is only 5% annual return
I get the math isnt as simple as that as you probably had a loan and a much smaller initial investment.

Turning your initial down payments of a few thousand up to $20k, and having that house paid off and a place to live for 32 years, is pretty fantastic.
