For the five years I was involved the team strictly managed who was playing. For a while BYU on-line students could play if they were enrolled in 12 credit hours but Utah and UVU complained about this and it was eliminated as an option….. also players had to maintain a minimum GPA.

I find it interesting that BYU discourages club sports……part of the BYU Admin arrogance and lack of a student focused organizational culture.
