The ICU World Cheer Championships are like the Olympics of cheer but include jazz and hip hop categories. In fact, this competition (virtual this year because of Covid) was broadcast on the Olympics Channel and the International Olympic Committee in July fully endorsed the ICU and made cheer eligible to petition to be in Olympics.
For the ICU World Cheer Championships, one team is chosen from each country that enters. USA Cheer - the National Governing Body of Cheer in the United States - chose the Cougarettes to be the representatives for the US in jazz and hip hop. There is also a Junior division comprised of high school-level athletes.
In hip hop, the US team (our Cougarettes) beat the teams from the following countries:
Japan (who had won gold the last three years)
Ecuador
People's Republic of China
Australia
Greece
Norway
Independent Athletes of the ICU
In jazz, they beat the teams from:
Bulgaria
Independent Athletes of the ICU
Ecuador
Japan
Chinese Taipei
Greece
People's Republic of China
